Where would the world be without the tireless work of educators? Certainly a very different place. Thanks to the contributions of teachers, students at all levels are maximizing their scholastic potential, looking forward to increased self-confidence, higher salaries, and exciting opportunities to advance in their careers. Quality education sets a productive trajectory toward success. Whether one is simply starting out or transitioning into a new field or profession, they can count on the power of education to open new doors and set them apart from their competition.

Historical Figures: Laying the Foundation for a Working Education in America

Throughout history numerous exemplary educators have helped to shape schools and learning institutions into what we recognized today. Freidrich Wilhelm Fröbel coined the term kindergarten — literally meaning “children’s garden” — when he created a center focused on transitioning children from the home to school environment. Catherine Esther Beecher, sister of Harriett Beecher Stowe, was responsible for establishing one of the first schools for girls in the United States and was a lifelong supporter of women’s education.

Herbert Spencer, considered one of the most prominent Social Darwinists of the 19th century, invented the phrase “survival of the fittest.” He applied his expertise to the most pivotal aspects of society including politics, economics and education. He was a major proponent of modern curriculum theory and emphasized the importance of course studies that would most help students to thrive in their respective cultures — a foundation of education.

Besides earning the title of a founding father of the United States, Benjamin Franklin was also a staunch advocate for self-education, and founded the first American public library facilities in 1731. He helped to streamline education and, in 1749, established one of the first formalized English-language grammar schools in Philadelphia. This was a turning point as a young America began to break away from Classical modes and shape its education system to what it is today. Likewise, President Thomas Jefferson maintained radical and visionary ideals about education throughout his life, and when he retired from his career in politics, founded the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.

The Future of Enrichment

Generations of educators continue to devote their lives to building bright futures for their students. They are carrying on a centuries-long tradition of delivering freedom, prestige, hope and honor through education. Technology and the advent of Web 2.0 is helping to broaden the industry exponentially. More people than ever are gaining access to these powerful tools for research and enrichment. Furthermore, online learning is becoming a viable means for people to advance academically, without needing access to a physical learning space.
