Adeline Riha is a volunteer with the Andreas Cancer Center of the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Ms. Riha’s commitment to volunteerism was born from working as a high school teacher for 33 years; she retired in 2005. The past eight years have found her piloting new volunteer programs at Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) in Mankato, volunteering more than 3100 hours in the Andreas Cancer Center. She volunteers as a pen pal for fourth graders in her community, where they write back and forth for most of the year, and then get to meet before the school years ends; it is a lot of fun for her. She became involved in her profession because she was used to being with students and other adults everyday for 33 years, so when she left that environment, she wanted to do something to give back to her community. Her mother always wanted her to be a nurse, so when she became ill, Ms. Riha took care of her in the nursing home, and felt that this was something she could do in her mother’s honor.
