Anchorage, Alaska | October 19, 2010 | Dorothy Matsui, a special education teacher at Gladys Wood Elementary School, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for her knowledge, expertise and leadership in special education.

Driven by her love for children and determination to help them reach their academic potentials, Dorothy Matsui has dedicated nearly 30 years to the field of primary education. Citing the most gratifying aspect of her career as having the opportunity to see her students succeed, Ms. Matsui intends to continue in her capacity as she moves forward. She initially became involved in special education at the age of 12 when she would babysit for a child with Down Syndrome.

Ms. Matsui earned a master’s degree in special education from the University of Alaska in Anchorage; she is a member of the Anchorage Education Association, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Education Association. She enjoys reading, gardening and sports, and she is a volunteer with the United States Olympic Committee.
