A veteran educator, Dr. Huechtker has devoted the last 28 years to helping students grow in their personal and professional lives. This motivation drives his work as chairman of the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences at UAB. Currently in his eighth year in this capacity, he is noted for his administrative expertise, which he employs to implement medical technology and biotechnology for genetic testing and counseling. Originally a physician assistant, Dr. Huechtker obtained certification in 1975 from Duke University Medical Center and went on to occupy PA leadership positions at Duke, the Medical College of Georgia and East Carolina University. He earned a Ph.D. in 2004 from Warren National University, a master’s degree in public and healthcare administration in 1981 from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, a bachelor’s degree in 1979 from Marymount College, and an associate degree in science in 1977 from the State University of New York. An Eagle Scout with several military honors to his name, he considers helping others achieve their own goals to be the most gratifying aspect of his career as an educator. He credits his success to striving to make the workplace enjoyable for all and to caring about people at all levels, be they students, staff faculty, or administrators.
