Ms. Sanders began working in the education field 37 years ago. She spent 30 of those years working in special education. For 14 years, she worked at Flower Mound High School. Ms. Sanders functioned as a special education resource teacher and taught English to students in grades 9-12. She also ensured students meet IEP objectives, tutored, and graded assignments.
Ms. Sanders’s career has taken her across the country and around the world. She has taught in Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Europe. When she lived in Germany, she worked for the University of Maryland, teaching GED classes to soldiers.
Ms. Sanders is the type of teacher that truly cares about her students and always puts their needs above all else. For her exceptional work in the classroom, she was a nominated for Tennessee Teacher of the Year in 1991. She attributes her success to creating different teaching methods in order to cater to the needs of each student.
Certified in secondary special education, Ms. Sanders earned a Bachelor of Science in English, with a minor in history, at The University of Tennessee. She stays abreast of changes in her field through her affiliation with the National Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority for Women Educators, American Federation of Teachers, National Association of Teachers of English, and Council of Exceptional Children.
Elayne Sanders was originally selected for inclusion in EliteAMERICAN Educators in November 2013. We are proud to be featuring Ms. Sanders again in EliteAMERICAN Educators for 2014-15.
