Truckee, California | January 10, 2011 | Erin-Michelle LeFevers, Chairwoman and English teacher at North Tahoe High School, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for demonstrating enthusiasm, guidance, and brilliance in English instruction. With over a decade of professional experience teaching English, Ms. LeFevers initially became involved in her profession because of her love for teaching and she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Attributing her success in the industry to her interest in helping future generations succeed, Ms. LeFevers remains abreast on current trends and is required to do 150 hours of professional development every five years.
Ms. LeFevers teaching philosophy is based around making students active members of their education by providing them with the information, but then making them responsible for maintaining their notebooks and completing their homework. The homework she assigns is geared to be the basis for the discussions in class. She requires students to read on their own and complete an activity based on the reading, then the next day in class they discuss the meaning and evaluate the text. She continues to refresh her teaching by taking classes at different colleges and the essays she assigns (specifically to senior year students) are actual assignments from college freshman composition courses from a variety of colleges. She often finds that there are students who believe they cannot write, so she assigns essays based on topics students can relate to, eventually easing them into more complicated topics. Ms. LeFevers learned from a young age the importance of teaching and she knows that inspiring the next generation can be immensely rewarding.
A graduate of North Tahoe High School, Ms. LeFevers earned a Master of Arts in English from National University in 2009. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in English plus 60 credits and a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies from California State University in Chico. She is proudly affiliated with the Tahoe Truckee Education Association and the California Teachers Association.
