Babson Park, MA, February 21, 2011, Helena A. Alfonzo, Teacher for Newton South High School, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for dedication, leadership and achievements in secondary education.
A 25-year veteran of academia, Ms. Alfonzo is best noted for her expertise in Spanish education. She conducts courses in Spanish and other Romance languages as a teacher at Newton South High School. To this capacity she brings her experiences instructing students at Mater Salvatoris School and María Inmaculada School in her native Venezuela. She also previously served as the director of Boston College’s Department of Romance Languages & Literatures. Ms. Alfonzo considers herself fortunate to be able to use her knowledge to educate and help others. She attributes her success to dedication, passion, commitment, and persistence.
Ms. Alfonzo earned a Ph.D. (ABD) in 2007 and a master’s degree in Hispanic studies in 2004, both from Boston College. Also educated in Venezuela, she graduated cum laude from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello with a bachelor’s degree in Hispanic language and literature. She was honored by BC in 2007 and 2004 with the Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award. She is a member of the Modern Language Association.
As she moves forward in her career, Ms. Alfonzo plans to complete her Ph.D. and continue teaching. When she is not working, she enjoys playing tennis, taking walks, and weightlifting.
