Following his completion of a Bachelor of Arts, Dr. Mielke has dedicated his professional life to teaching and conducting research on the environment. Focusing on urban geochemistry and toxicology, his work has been described among his peers as pioneering and groundbreaking, especially his research on urban levels of lead and its affect on children. He has continued his research and taught across the United States at a variety of institutions, including the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Maryland, and the University of Minnesota. He is currently a research professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, La.

Holding a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Michigan, Dr. Mielke sustains his knowledge through his memberships with the American Chemical Society and the Society of Toxicology.
