Ponce, PR, February 17, 2011, Ivonne Diaz, Associate Professor at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for dedication, leadership and achievement in higher education.
Taught to look after her six younger siblings, Ms. Diaz honed her mentoring skills at an early age. This informal training formed the basis for what would become a long teaching career and, over the course of the last 36 years, helped her steer countless students towards academic achievement. A specialist in English instruction, Ms. Diaz today functions as an associate professor at Inter. In this capacity, she teaches online courses, develops course material, quizzes and evaluations, and advises students. She takes pride in her reputation as a selfless nurturer dedicated to her pupils’ and colleagues’ progress, and considers nothing more rewarding than receiving thanks from the people she has helped.
Known for her ability to coordinate activities, Ms. Diaz also directs evaluation committees and organizes workshops for students and professors. She is a proven leader who helmed the curriculum committee that wrote three online courses, and who is currently mentoring eight student teachers in four different schools. She has also been entrusted with organizing the University of Puerto Rico’s 99th anniversary celebrations.
Ms. Diaz earned a master’s degree in English as a Second Language in 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in secondary education in 1966, both from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. She is the immediate past president of the Puerto Rico chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Federation. As she prepares to wind down her career, Ms. Diaz plans to complete her first book, an analysis of English and Spanish for university teachers. She plans to increase her volunteer work when she retires.
Already an active member of her community, Ms. Diaz serves as a Eucharist minister for La Merced Parish and volunteers regularly with the American Cancer Society. Away from her professional duties, she enjoys reading and dancing.
