A former academic dean and vice president for academic affairs, Prof. James brings a holistic perspective of the American education system to Alice Lloyd College. She teaches classes in sociology and social science, as well as utilizes her administrative experience to advise students and serve on multiple committees. Educated in both South Africa and the United States, Prof. James earned a Master of Arts in theology, with distinction, in 1996 from the University of Natal, a Ph.D. in sociology, political science and African studies in 1990 from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and sociology in 1987 from Furman University. Unable to attend college until her 40s, Prof. James is deeply grateful to have been given the priceless opportunity to advance herself and today gives back through her association with Alice Lloyd, an institution dedicated to providing leadership education to deserving students. A member of the American Sociological Association, she has written several papers and contributed articles to a number of academic publications. These include “Jesus, Community, and Development: Models of Leadership from Third Quest Images of the Historical Jesus” and “Supporting Injustice or Empowering People: The Christian Churches and Community Development in South Africa.”
