Shirley J. Mills, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor with The University of Texas-Pan American. In her current role, Dr. Mills makes the most of her expertise as a mentor of young women in leadership positions, by serving as an assessment coordinator. She also meets with the dean of the college, teaches two graduate courses, chairs two dissertations, meets with doctoral students, and maintains online courses. After her distinguished career in the K-12 arena, Dr. Mills furthered her education and obtained a Ph.D. After, she ventured into the field of higher education, where she has taught and develop numerous online courses. Previously, she served as a teaching assistant at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During her career, she has authored numerous journal publications and book chapters. Ms. Mills had powerful female mentors and role models and she hopes to do the same for other women, and encourage them that they can do it if they only try. Moving from a 37-year career in K-12 to a revitalizing and challenging career in higher education was the best thing she ever did for herself. Her career reminds her of Irma Bombeck’s poignant statement: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’
