MCKEES ROCKS, PA, January 16, 2014, Melanie Kerber, Ed.D., Principal of the Sto-Rox School District, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in education administration.Passionate about education and providing children with the tools they need to succeed in life, Dr. Kerber made the decision to enter the education field. She embarked on a career path in special education in the mid-1970s when exceptional children were often educated in private schools or not educated. Dr. Kerber’s strong skill set and desire to excel enabled her to progress in the field, and she has had the pleasure of leading four public and private schools into the 21st century.Dr. Kerber has been involved in academia for 40 years and has been serving in her position for the past seven. Over the course of her career her focus has never wavered from the children. She believes that educators as well as the general public should keep in mind that children are the future leaders and as a society we have to do all that is possible to prepare them for the considerable challenges that await them. Dr. Kerber ensures she does her part to help the children by serving as a principal in the Sto-Rox School District. In her role, she is responsible for overseeing all of the day-to-day activities of a high and middle school located in a metropolitan city, coordinating between the teachers and administrative staff, disciplining the students when necessary, working extensively with parents, and building relationships with social service agencies to provide ancillary care to students. Dr. Kerber also writes grants and takes on the roles of social worker, school nurse, financial adviser and guidance counselor.Dr. Kerber has helped countless students succeed academically. She gets great satisfaction out of knowing she has made a difference in a person’s life. Dr. Kerber has witnessed students with major obstacles in West Virginia, Central African, Kingston, Jamaica, metropolitan Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh graduate from high school and go on to pursue successful careers and endeavors.Dr. Kerber doesn’t just lend her expertise inside the confines of the school, but also stays involved with children overseas and in her community. She is heavily involved in charity work and serves as the chairman of the board of Breaking Silence: Ending Youth Violence, a grassroots organization of concerned citizens formed in response to the murders of six of her former students in less than one year. This group provides mentoring as well as constructive out of school activities for students. As chairman, she sponsored an all-day spa day for girls, a basketball tournament and other acitivites during the summer months.  A well-rounded and educated professional, Dr. Kerber attributes her success to the influence and support of her family, especially her husband, Frank, and son Brandon, her strong work ethic, excellent mentors and solid educational background. She intends to continue affecting change in educational practices, but on a larger scale in the coming years.
