Spring Valley, CA, July 9, 2014, Alexander Riley, Chair of Graduate Studies at United States University, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in higher education.
Mr. Riley first started teaching at San Diego City College in 1985 while attending law school. He soon realized that law school was not the right path for him, and later obtained a master’s degree while working for the superior court for 15 years. During that time, he was approached by a friend who asked him if he could design a course on drug and alcohol counseling and present it to the dean. A week later, National University called him and asked him to teach the class and also design the whole substance abuse course for California and other states.
Mr. Riley joined the United States University in 2009 and was recently promoted to the position of Chair of Graduate Studies after being the Director of Graduate Studies, where he was rewriting the graduate program and designing the classes so that students can pass mandatory tests in their field. In his new position, he is responsible for getting policies together for teachers and instructors including changing the grading matrix to a unified rubric throughout all program courses, ensuring that each student has a copy of the grading rubric so they know exactly what they are being graded on, teaching Capstone Integrative Projects, choosing books and the curriculum, and designing a graduate global health concentration.
Among the many accomplishments of his career, one was writing the book “Addiction 101: Being a Human Being First,” which was selected to be used by the counselors throughout the California Penal system. He is also proud of having been the only black male that graduated with his Psy.D. in his class, which was a great accomplishment for himself, but more for the entire Riley family. Mr. Riley attributes his success to the fact that he knows he is going to succeed and believes in himself. Looking toward the future, he intends to assist the university and the graduate program in becoming one of the best in the country.
