Dr. S. Barbara Raby, Adjunct Professor at Lansing Community College, and Retired Bilingual and English as a Second Language Program Director for the Pontiac School District, has been recognized by Elite American Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education and bilingual education.
Having arrived in the United States as a small child only speaking Hungarian until she was 6 years old, Dr. Raby knows firsthand the difficulties of being an English learner. She saw areas that needed improvement and wanted to be part of the improvement so 33 years ago she entered the education field. She has helped to improve curriculum in her district to help English learners. She presented at the Comparative Educational society in Budapest and also teaches at Wayne State University, where she also received her EDD.
As an adjunct professor, Dr. Raby teaches higher education courses in the areas of linguistics to English speakers of other languages, and mentors doctoral dissertations. Prior to her retirement as a Bilingual and English as a Second Language Program Director, Dr. Raby implemented accepted practices throughout the district, monitored state and federal grants for compliance issues, served as a liaison for the school district to the diverse ethnic communities of Pontiac, and developed and trained the staff. She became involved in her profession because of the inspiration she received from her mother, an educator and the first woman graduate to study mathematics at her college in Budapest.
Dr. S. Barbara Raby was originally selected for inclusion in Elite American Educators in February, 2012. We are proud to be featuring Dr. Raby again in Elite American Educators for 2015.
